We like you for lots of reasons. We share history, we probably share ethics, we're betting we share appreciation of the arts and good food and ecological good sense. With all those givens, we are betting that we share some taste in music.
So we'd love to hear your suggestions for this party's iPod songlist: whaddya think we should play during supper? While we're having cocktails and chatting? And most importantly--what do you want to dance to?
Please do us the favor of clicking on the "comments" link below and sharing your ideas with us!

I'll start! I'll try to limit myself to three suggestions.
ReplyDeletefor cocktails and chatting background music:
Sunday Kind of Love (Etta James)
for dinner music:
Stir It Up (Marley)
for dancing: lots of Prince! Also Otis Redding. Also Sublime. Also Outkast.
Okay, that was more than three. Your turn!
ok..i'm going to work within those three categories:
ReplyDeletedisclaimer...sorry, i'm kind of in a hawaiian mood, especially because this is going to be an outdoor wedding.
cocktail hour:
Ka'au Crater Boys, John Cruz, Jack Johnson, Pure Heart (Mr. Sun Cho Lee) (or our version!!) ;)
dinner music:
Natural Vibrations, Three Plus (Honey Baby), Bruddah Iz
dancing:
Mary J Blige, TLC, Flo-Rida, Kanye West
ok, and I do apologize for the next couple of suggestions. But Raquel was jumping up and down in the background and wanted to give her suggestions separately.... This is from Raquel:
cocktail
"dirty" christina aguilera
"ride my pony" ginuwine
"no panties" Trina
dinner
"peaches and cream" 112
"how many licks" ludacris
dancing
Cyndi Lauper
I would be tickled to expose you two (and all available ears) to Bonobo. Anything off of 'Dial "M" for Monkey' or 'Days to Come' or 'Nitelife' or 'Live Sessions'. It's all groovy, new jazz with a touch of electronique. Mostly instrumental, so not obtrusive during convo/dinner (except for uncontrollable swaying about and head nodding).
ReplyDeleteAnd since you're keeping it local with island flavor, there should be some Groundation for dancing: Dem Rise, Music is the Most High, Mighty Souls, Fight All You Can, Undivided. . . I could go on.. ..
Only one suggestion so far (but will keep thinking about it). I think Ice Cream by Sarah McLachlan would be perfect for you two.
ReplyDeleteReally looking forward to it.
Amy
I've always liked This Must be the Place, by the Talking Heads.
ReplyDeleteHome is where I want to be
Pick me up and turn me round
I feel numb - burn with a weak heart
(so I) guess I must be having fun
The less we say about it the better
Make it up as we go along
Feet on the ground
Head in the sky
It’s ok I know nothing’s wrong . . nothing
Hi yo I got plenty of time
Hi yo you got light in your eyes
And you’re standing here beside me
I love the passing of time
Never for money
Always for love
Cover up + say goodnight . . . say goodnight
Home - is where I want to be
But I guess I’m already there
I come home - -she lifted up her wings
Guess that this must be the place
I can’t tell one from another
Did I find you, or you find me?
There was a time before we were born
If someone asks, this where I’ll be . . . where I’ll be
Hi yo we drift in and out
Hi yo sing into my mouth
Out of all tose kinds of people
You got a face with a view
I’m just an animal looking for a home
Share the same space for a minute or two
And you love me till my heart stops
Love me till I’m dead
Eyes that light up, eyes look through you
Cover up the blank spots
Hit me on the head ah ooh
We also played The Origin of Love, from Hedwig and the Angry Inch, but that might not be appropriate for every wedding.
ReplyDeleteThanks everyone for your song ideas so far!
ReplyDeletePlease send us mp3s of the song(s) if it's convenient.
A starting list from me:
Parenthesis by The Blow
Come on Petunia by The Blow
True Affection by The Blow
Anti Love Song by Betty Davis
Underwear by The Magnetic Fields
Papa was a Rodeo by The Magnetic Fields
The Way You Say Goodnight by The Magnetic Fields
A Chicken With Its Head Cut Off by The Magnetic Fields

Let's Pretend We're Bunny Rabbits by The Magnetic Fields
The Book of Love by The Magnetic Fields
Washington D.C. by The Magnetic Fields
...more later...
A&L; your 'seasoned" guests(read older), might enjoy Beach Boys, Diana Krall, Harry Connick, Jr., Beatles, and maybe Glenn Miller to honor Adam's grandfather.....and some cool jazz.
ReplyDeleteThanks all for the suggestions! This is fun--keep 'em coming!
ReplyDeleteWe were also thinking "As Long as the Grass Shall Grow" by Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash.
Sandy--I LOVE Glenn Miller, and I love the idea of our musical selections honoring family members.
I want to send you an entire playlist off iTunes. How do I do that? Surfrunner!! NEed tech help!!
ReplyDeleteOK, I lost my blog entry somehow. If Lorelle hadn't asked that I give this some thought I might have let it go with the first failure.
ReplyDeleteClearly I am in the "seasoned" guests. If you get my ideas twice it is not because I feel they are terribly fabulous, it's because I am technically challenged.
Going with the backyard feel still -
Blackbird (Beatles or CSN)
Blossom (James Taylor, Sweet Baby James)
I pared down my original list when I realized a lot of what I listen to has pretty sad lyrics. Here are a couple of artist/albums that might have something you like -
Sam Cooke
Three Dog Night
Emmylou Harris (particularly Wrecking Ball)
Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris, All the Road Running
Robert Plant and AAlison Krauss, Raising Sand
Zucchero, Zucchero & Co. (particularly I Lay Down with an Angel with John Lee Hooker)
Dancing List:
ReplyDeleteU2 - Mysterious Ways
Madonna - Like a Prayer
Outkast - Hey Ya
Prince - Kiss
ABBA - Dancing Queen
Aretha Franklin - Respect
Groove Armada - Superstylin'
More to come...
I think that we should dance to some Mike Jackson, especially since we will be drinking "Jesus Juice" as he calls it...other than that I officially request anything and everything from the School House days - Gorillaz, Moby, Run Lola Run....By all means play meaningful music for the first half, but by 'dance party' let it be music that our bodies will remember better than we do!
ReplyDeletefrom an email from a high school friend:
ReplyDeletemight i suggest some Ray Lamontagne, M Ward, Madeleine Peyroux... those quickly came to mind for slower mood stuff.
kanye would get my vote for some dance tunes, and i can always get down to "california" by tupac... don't know why, but that song has a spot in my dancing heart.
oh, and some good 70s tune are always good for a laugh on the dance floor... beegees, abba... the classics
And suggestions via email from Simmi, one of my grad school friends:
ReplyDeleteRay LaMontagne - you are the best thing
Priscilla Ahn - living in a tree
I guess our friends are fond of Mr. LaMontagne!
Alice suggests:
ReplyDeleteBeyonce
Black Eyed Peas
Fergie
Mary J Blige
for dance music, of course.
